Grandfather Mountain :: Banner Elk, NCGrandfather Mountain is probably the most noticeable natural feature in our area. A large rock formation that is a part of the Blue Ridge Mountain range, Grandfather Mountain is a unique set of peaks and crests that naturally resembles an old man in different positions depending on the direction. The most popular view, and the one that most are familiar with, is the view from Hwy 105 traveling towards Banner Elk from Boone. The old man "Grandfather" is seen lying down from this angle, and you can make out his forehead, eyebrow, nose, mouth, and chin. Another, lesser known view is on a trail that leads to the peaks of Grandfather. One particular large rock face that you will pass by on the trail closely resembles a worn old man's face.
