It was named for James Buchanan Duke, tobacco industrialist and tycoon, for whom Duke University is also named. Lake James North Carolina is created by a series of 4 dams that lie on the uppermost region of the Catawba River. The lake itself contains over 10 miles of surface area and has 150 miles of beautiful shoreline, in which you can see the gorgeous mountains rising in the distance. Lake James North Carolina is known for its wilderness appeal, as Lake James State Park is the state's largest waterfront state park and located right on over 3,000 acres of the lake’s southern shore.
