| Audobon Society Bird Walks |

The High Country Audubon Society is observing the 13th annual Great Backyard Bird Count. Bird walks will be held: Friday, Feb. 12, from 8-11 a.m. at W. Scott Kerr Lake, meet at the Visitor's Center, free to all participants; Saturday, Feb. 13, from 9:30 a.m.-noon at Grandfather Mountain, meet at the Nature Museum (admission fee to Grandfather Mountain is required); Sunday, Feb. 14, Valle Crucis Community Park, 10 to 11 a.m., free to all participants; and Monday, Feb. 15, at Boone Greenway, from 3:30-4:30 p.m., meet in parking lot past the Swim Complex (Boone wetland area), free to all participants. In case of inclement weather, these organized bird walks will be canceled.

A rummage sale collection for the next big Watauga Humane Society sale is held each Monday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Blue Skies Storage office on State Farm Road, Boone. Volunteers are on hand to receive no-longer-wanted clothing, books, working appliances, furniture, linens, and other miscellaneous items. Drop-off may be scheduled at other times with advance arrangement; call Lyn at 828-297-1259, or for larger items, call Lee at 828-266-3500.

| ASU Spring Visiting Writers Series Opens |

Short story writer Amy Knox Brown opens the spring series Feb. 18 with the craft talk "The Perils and Pleasures of the Short-short Story" at 2 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union's Table Rock Room. She will read from her work beginning at 7:30 p.m., also in the Table Rock Room.

| Appalachian State Fiddler's Convention |

Appalachian Heritage will bring the second annual Appalachian State Fiddler's Convention on Feb. 19-20, all day at Plemmons Student Union on the ASU campus. Saturday events include competitions in fiddle, banjo, guitar, flat food dancing, old-time stringband and folk song, including youth and novice categories. Registration for the competitions is from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday and the competitions take place Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. On Friday night, there will be a square and contra dance with the Forget-Me-Nots, a group of young Celtic fiddlers from Banner Elk. Jesse Edgerton will be making the dance calls throughout the night. Doors will open at 7 p.m., lessons at 7:30 pm and the real deal begins at 8 p.m. On Saturday, there will also be workshops in fiddle, guitar, and banjo throughout the day. The workshops will be facilitated by Riley Baugus and The Stewart Brothers. There will also be a concert by Riley Baugus and The Stewart Brothers Saturday at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. All workshops and competitions are free and open to the public.

Appalachian State University’s 2009-2010 Performing Arts Series welcomes the return of the legendary actress/comedian Lily Tomlin to the stage of Farthing Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 20. Tomlin’s one-woman show will be an evening of classic favorites. Advance tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for Appalachian’s students and students 18 and under and $18 for seniors and Appalachian’s faculty and staff. Mount Jefferson State Park in Ashe County will present the program "Vista Viewing" on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. Meet at the second overlook. Enjoy a view of three states, while learning the oral tradition associated with Mount Jefferson and its surrounding mountains. This program is weather dependent. | "Eastern Blue Bird" Program at New River State Park |

New River State Park in Ashe County will present the program "Eastern Bluebird" on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 11 p.m. Meet a park ranger to see a slide presentation about the eastern bluebird. From 2-3 p.m., children can stop by and assemble a free bluebird box, while learning about what kind of habitat bluebirds require and other interesting facts about their fascinating lives. Slide show and bird box assemble will take place at the park's Visitor Center at the U.S. 221 access. Call ahead to reserve your bluebird box.
